UK Council formed for Child Internet Safety

UKCCIS, the UK Council formed for Child Internet Safety will be working to create a roadmap for complete child internet safety to be published early next year.

The strategy will look to:

•    Launch a public awareness safety campaign.
•    Take measures to protect young people and children. These include steps such as pulling down illegal sites.
•    Push and promote ‘responsible’ online advertising to children.
•    To try and establish voluntary code of practice, with an examination of how sites handle messages or videos posted by users.

The new move follows a report by psychologist Tanya Byron. It was commissioned by the UK government earlier this year. The report has called for setting up a child safety council; this as part of a drive to safeguard children who use internet and other digital technologies.

UK Prime Minister Mr Brown praised the report and the subsequent efforts to bring the diverse organisations together under one umbrella. He said, “This is (perhaps) the first in the world. It will be path-breaking. Already I have been talking to prime ministers in other countries who are interested in this idea.”

John Carr of UKCCIS informed the BBC NEWS the council would offer a last chance for the online players to police themselves.
