Google Releases Preferred Sites

Google has really been taking a lot of efforts to move closer towards personalised results. Hence, the search engine giant has started testing a brand new feature called Preferred Sites.

This new feature will be able to inform Google about their most trusted websites and if they would like to have them featuring more often in the search results. Google, in turn, will give recommendations on websites, which can become a part of the users’ list on the basis of the search history.

Google’s help page for Preferred Sites said that the feature will allow users to set Google searches based on their preference so that they will be in conformity with the requirement and liking of the users’. All users need to do is fill up those websites they usually rely on for information and the preferred sites will appear on the results page.

Alex Chitu from the Google System Blog carried out some experiments with the new feature. The results were indeed interesting. He added IMDB and New York Times (NYT) to the list of preferred sites and the results were the most interesting. He said that after adding the two sites, results for the search query ‘how to lose friends and alienate people’ got dramatically altered. Two pages from NYT website got promoted to the first three results. They, however, did not feature in the top 30 results for a normal search.
