Google proved to be an undisputed leader in the category of online search engines yet again as it neared 70 percent of search share in the US, as per the latest figures released by Hitwise. The success has been huge for the online giant considering the amount of competition it faces from a number of search engines such as Yahoo, MSN, Ask.com, Baidu, etc.

The analyst firm said that Google’s share rose from 68.29 percent in May to 69.17 percent in June. During the same period, second most popular search engine Yahoo saw a decrease to 19.62 percent from 19.95 percent, while Microsoft performed poorly and stood at 5.46 percent, a decrease from 5.89 percent.

Ask.com captured the fourth position and managed to increase its gains over the last year. However, it too saw a marginal decrease from 4.23 percent in May to 4.17 percent in June.

It is to be noted that the statistics are based on a sample of 10 million online users in the US, Hitwise said.

Google may not be too surprised with this statistics as it has continued to dominate the search business since past several years. In fact, it had crossed the 60 percent share threshold way back in July 2006. Though it slipped immediately in the following month, it has never looked back since September 2006 and went on heading north till now.

Moreover it is not only the US search market that Google has successfully dominated. Rather, it has been able to enjoy its supremacy even in the UK and the Australian market, besides many other nations.

Google search properties (Google.com and Google.co.uk) captured a mammoth 87 percent of the entire UK searches in June this year, which represents a 10 percent shoot up compared to June last year. In the Australian market, it managed to grab even greater share of 88 percent of all AU searches during last month, which represents a healthy growth of 12 percent compared to June 2007.
