Antiquated version of popular search engine Google

Wanna indulge into some time travel? Does the idea of going back to the year 2001 excite you, and that too, with search giant Google? As part of its much-touted 10th birthday celebrations, the firm is inviting its users to Google 2001. This is the ‘antiquated version’ of its popular search engine, which dates back to 2001.

The search website has all those embellishments from the old version. This includes the logo and also a claim of having indexed a whopping 1,326,920,000 Web pages. Wondering as why Google has picked 2001 rather than the year 1998 the year it was launched? 2001 was its first year to mark a complete archived index.

So, a search done on Infosys will bring largely company websites. Another on Apple brings results that bear nothing more than the firm or some related websites. Also, missing are Google Images, News, Orkut and all other fancy features that we have so become used to while searching.

Google acknowledges in its FAQ zone that the index is not a perfect reproduction of the 2001 index. The company states that it is a pretty fair approximation, as some index entries have got removed over time for various reasons.
