Why will the pay-n-use model ultimately work online?
Here is how the curious proposition of ‘saving time with faster search’ has been co-related to real-life examples of the pressing market requirement, albeit in different contexts in a recent news report.
Refinements in search and the time factor
The IHT World Business technology writer, Damon Darlin, puts forward an interesting theory on the real value of time in context of paying for ‘search’. Taking the time clock backward, the column, entitled ‘Saving time with faster search’, asks: “Do you remember how long it took to conduct a Google search a dozen years ago, when the service first began? Probably not, but the engineers calculate that their refinements have saved users nearly a billion seconds a day. (Using the search engine to quickly make the calculation, which comes out to about 1,800 lifetimes.).”
The writer elaborates: “We all seem to prefer to spend time ferreting out news of Lindsay Lohan’s fingernail art or sorting out the best report of an earthquake in Palm Springs, California, than to pay someone a pittance to do it for us. The same goes for finding a cheaper airfare or discount coupons. A not-insignificant amount of time can be spent on such searches — hours each week, undoubtedly.”
Correct calculation of the time value
Ultimately, people will realize the basic error of their ways once they make the correct calculation of the value of their precious time and begin paying up for their news and their videos, the writer argues.
After all, a significant chunk of viewers started paying less than a dollar for the ease of downloading a song from Amazon.com or iTunes, rather than wasting their time seeking a playable pirated version.
